Preface
In 1979 Stephen Bush was appointed Professor of Polymer Engineering at UMIST where he was in a daily battle to maintain standards and quality in the courses he gave and examined.
Gillian was a part-time Further Education lecturer in the Secretarial Department of Macclesfield College (from 1981) teaching post-16 young people and adults. She took part in the change from manual typewriters and shorthand to word processing and witnessed at the same time a marked decline in English grammar and spelling.
