Design and Manufacturing Process for a novel replacement automobile bumper system

Feasibility assessment for Bumper to Bumper Ltd.

S F Bush with W G Harland.

Introduction

The original idea as explained to us envisaged a single bumper for the replacement market. Moulding such a system at a competitive price (£14-£16 ex works per pair for the smallest vehicle) seems quite feasible – as outlined below – but we prefer the concept of a so-called Universal Bumper System to take account of the large variety of shapes and/or mounting systems which would have to be covered.

Such a Bumper System would consist of a choice of two straight centre-sections of different cross-sections plus a choice of two or more corner sections of compatible section. The straight sections would be cut to size by the customer. Metal mounting brackets would be provided.
